Is photography photography?

Today I’m going to open (or reopen) a debate, and warm, I know, like the one that opens an open wound knowing the risk it’s taking, but I can’t contain myself. I’m going to be slapped all over the place and more than one (or one) is going to blacklist me, I accept it. But as I always speak out of respect, I hope that my opinion will also be respected, and I will defend mobile photography. Because yes, it’s a photography blog, we write a lot about SLR photography, but that doesn’t mean the photograph is unique to DSLR, EVILs or Bridge. And yes, mobile photography is also photography, it’s also art.

All this comes because the other day a good friend told me something like stop taking pictures with my cell phone because it wasn’t photography and I was wasting my talent, and he said it fondly, I know, because he loves me so much. and he wants me to take pictures with the camera because he thinks I’m wasting my time with my laptop. And I didn’t understand it, because because of the kind of photos it takes, to my liking, bright, original and creative, it does not need an SLR. I could do them with a cell phone or even a camera made with a cardboard box. Because he has this gift, this photographic eye. So today I write this article, to demystify the cameras and support mobile photography. And encourage all people who have a photographic eye, but not SLR, to keep creating photography.

  • There are good photographers who have discovered photography through the camera of their mobile and.
  • In fact.
  • Their iPhone has taken them very far in this world.

Does taking pictures with a phone make you a worse photographer? To be a photographer the really important thing is to have the sensitivity and photographic eye to reach the audience and move. Today there are phones with very good optics on the market. There are also those with very bad cameras, or not. It doesn’t work just because you press the button and it takes two seconds, so goodbye to the photo!

Now, before we go any further, I need to make a clarification. I’m not talking about professional photography. Obviously, I’m talking about photography from a creative and artistic point of view. Of course, you’re not going to cover a marriage report with a cell phone! It’s not a fashion catalog or a newborn photo shoot. The SLR camera offers a kind of performance on a professional level, but it doesn’t have to be creatively or artistically essential.

I was moved by the photos taken with my mobile and yet I remained impassive with other shots taken with one of the best cameras on the market. I’ve seen empty, soulless SLR photos where I didn’t stop a nanosecond. Art is not in the quality of the camera, but in the sensitivity of the person holding it. That’s right.

I myself realized that some of my best photos I take with my cell phone, or at least the ones I love the most and the ones that have congratulated me the most, because sometimes it is not about pixels or sharpness, but the moment, of knowing how to see and capture an emotion.

Like everything in life, shooting with your mobile has pros and cons, and everyone has to weigh in which direction the scale tilts. Well, an advantage that weighs on me a lot, just like you doesn’t weigh anything.

Advantage:

Disadvantages

Advantage:

Disadvantages:

Did you think all of these were advantages?Below are some drawbacks

Mine, of course. If you’re in professional photography, there’s no doubt about it, but does that mean if you don’t live off it, you can’t be a photographer? Can’t you be an artist like the best pine, Vivian Maier lived off photography?Well, no, she was a nanny, yet she’s considered one of the greatest photographers ever, did Van Gogh live from her paintings?Anybody doubt he’s a painter?

Photography is an art, and anyone who manages to excite or provoke a feeling in the audience can be considered a photographer, regardless of image quality, whether sellable or not, alive or not.

In many articles I have included as an example photos of Emilio Chuli (@ejota_seventyeight), who has an impressive gallery created with his iPhone, does not shoot with an SLR but has a gift and knows how to create art with his phone.

And like him, there are a lot of photographers hiding on social networks like Instagram, and the truth, for me, if they move me and make me look at their photos for more than two seconds, they deserve all my respect, even if they don’t. They do not take a photo with an SLR, do not include shutter speeds, flash curtains, reversal rings or focal lengths, but know the composition, light and sensitivity.

And to show a button, here are some photos taken with a mobile phone

Finally, I leave you some galleries that you should visit, sometimes they rotate with another type of camera, but most are with cell phone:

I know that when I publish this more than one and one, you will shout to heaven, I wait for your comments, because they enrich, because everyone has their reasons and it is an infinite debate, without solution, but in which every contribution is There are many extremes, even if you do not want to fall into it, because life is neither black nor white, it is full of gray and infinite colors.

My humble view is that SLRs and mobiles can coexist in a world of people who love photography above all else. And you believe it?
