The human mind is truly splendid. Surfing is already an example of this and you can never think that humans have been unable to achieve something really amazing and great when they get to work incessantly. And putting their minds to work, a group of motorcyclists, surfers and film professionals have managed to achieve one of the greatest feats of recent times: filming a motorcyclist riding a wave. And this is not just any wave, we’re talking about something over 10 meters high and high intensity. For our happiness, everything went well and the result was incredible images.
In collaboration with DC Shoes?a clothing company developed mainly for extreme sports: world-renowned motocross athlete Robbie Maddison recently traveled to Tahiti and had an outdoor experience riding a wave on a motorcycle.
- Did you have your off-road motorcycle ?.
- Bikes made for trail riding ?.
- Specially charged with surfing and decided to catch waves.
- And we are not talking about small waves either.
- No.
- We are talking about a huge 10 meters.
- High waves that could absolutely crush someone.
- The crazy motorcycle race lasted almost three years in production and was of course shot on camera (lots of cameras in fact? POV shots were taken with a Sony 4K Action Cam.
- Apparently the X1000V) and edited for the details of an action sport.
- A segment as impressive as it is crazy.
There is also a behind-the-scenes documentary in the works, but unfortunately it looks like it will take a while to get out. We’ll at least have a little time before we see how they accomplished this feat of filming a dirt bike riding a wave in 4K. For now, we can only imagine how frustrated the attempts were and how exhausting it must have been to put a motorcycle in and out of the water that can easily weigh more than two hundred kilograms.
If you’re wondering if a motorcycle like the one you see on the streets every day could survive an underwater trip. the answer is simple and straightforward: no. To help you understand the process a little more, here’s a clip from your rolling stone interview:
Every time the bike passed under the waterline, we had extensive and exhausting mechanical work to restart and restart it for another series of race attempts. We knew we were doomed to sink the bike a couple of times in Tahiti, so we transferred a four. 450cc motor running to a two-stroke engine to have the advantage of having a less complicated engine and having less electronics and wiring for people to face.
It’s not just riding an amazing motorcycle in and of itself, but the production team behind this video also deserves all the honorable mentions in terms of cinematic techniques. The filming of this aquatic madness was very well done.
They are on par with other action sports movies that are full of aerial and slow motion scenes, an abundance sometimes useless, but these images have also added a range of other types of scenes and include macro shots with a more serene look, plus time-lapse shots (which, I suppose, were captured with cars or other bikes) , POV shots with Sony action cameras, underwater photos and many others.
Add to that the incredibly immersive sound design and fast and engaging editing and you’ll end up with one of the coolest and best-produced action sports images of the year. Really something to see and review.
