Body language in portrait photography

The body speaks, communicates, expresses it and more than we realize. You’ve probably heard of body language a few times. Well, today I’m going to tell you about this tool that you can use in your portraits to print any emotion, feeling or state that you want to convey. It is true that there are many studies on this subject, that each gesture can mean something specific and that it can also vary depending on the culture or situation. But it is also true that there are certain gestures, postures or bodily expressions that convey sensations without being an expert in the matter. I’m sure you already knew that someone around you wasn’t in the mood, no matter how much they told you otherwise, and I’m sure it was without having to analyze whether I had my arms in a certain position or put my hands in a certain area of the face was something else. Intuitive. Now imagine that you also know some gestures and postures that you can easily use in your portraits, would you like to take this opportunity? So read on, I’ll show you some examples.

I will start with the types of portraits, because depending on the type of profile we use, the image will tell us different things:

  • In a photograph we cannot capture the tone of voice but if we can transmit that tone with one gesture or with several.
  • We will see what some of them mean or transmit to us.

In the street you can carry out observation exercises, observe the postures and gestures of passers-by, the position and attitude of a person in relation to their environment, let’s look at two examples:

1. What do you think of this photo? At least it gives me the feeling that the two men on the right seriously question what the one on the left is telling them. Does that give you the same feeling?

2. What about these two young men? It’s clear they’re two strangers, but is it more obvious that they don’t want to have any eye or verbal contact?

Now a small portrait gallery so you can think about what they’re transmitting to you:

At other times, we talk on the blog about how to transmit sensations or feelings with your photographs, today we present another tool so that your photographs are even more full of symbolism, because as you well know, in a photograph it is not all quality, The story behind each capture or protagonist is what motivates many photography fans to continue to pull the trigger.
